Welcome Back: Q&A with Robyn & Graeme Lepper

Q: What are your earliest memories relating to gardening?

A: I remember Mum and Dad (Pauline and Denis) expanding the original garden to include the tennis court and swimming pool, and associated new plantings, which created the enjoyable family environment we have today. – Graeme

Q: Who or what inspired you to get into gardening?

A: Our mothers’ enthusiasm for gardening was an important influence. Their passion showed us the enjoyment that came from creating a garden. In many ways our love of gardening is a continuation of the interest and enthusiasm they passed on to us. – both

Q: What has kept you going as gardeners?

A: A big part of our enjoyment comes from seeing the garden develop, watching plants and trees grow, mature and eventually flower. There is a real satisfaction in seeing the changes that take place over the seasons and knowing that our own efforts have helped create them.  – both

Q: What does your garden mean to you?

A: It represents memories, enjoyment, creativity and a sense of achievement, giving us a connection with nature and the passing  seasons. It’s also a connection with family memories and has given us the pleasure of creating something beautiful and watching it flourish. This fifth-generation garden has been evolving for 125 years. – both

Q: How did you become part of the Centuria Taranaki Garden Festival?

A: My mother (Pauline Lepper) was part of the original Taranaki Rhododendron Festival for many years and inspired us to continue the legacy. We feel proud to carry on that tradition she helped create, while also sharing our own enjoyment and love of gardening with others. – Graeme
